Dr. Balaze was in Boston last month for the annual scientific session of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. Spending time with beloved colleagues from around the world, Dr. Balaze brought back with him some of the latest research and techniques in dentistry. Some of the hot topics worth mentioning - minimal prep and no prep veneer techniques, caries risk assessment, and aesthetic implant restoration techniques.

Dr. Balaze has been selected by the American Dental Association to participate in a focus group directed at discussing the most critical issues faced by dentists today. "I feel a great sense of responsibility to present what dentists in Beachwood, Cleveland, and Ohio are faced with. We strive to bring our patients to the highest level of oral health possible. With today's economy, unemployment, and gas prices, it's hard for some of our patients to accept ideal treatment," says Dr. Balaze. In spite of any challenges, Dr. Balaze is committed to providing metal-free, state of the art fillings, crowns, bridges, implants and dentures. With the materials and techniques that are available today, there is no reason to compromise quality.

Why use all ceramic crowns?

There are several answers to this question. We feel strongly that all dentistry should be aesthetic, and highly functional. Only when both form and function have been achieved at a high level do we consider treatment a success.

Many crowns are made using ceramic to cover a coping made of either metal, or zirconium. The coping, itself, is strong, and the ceramic on the outside is also strong. The bond between those two materials is a week link, and often is where we see a breakdown of function. Using only one material for the fabrication of your crown insures that there is only one interface - between your crown and your tooth - and significantly reduces the rate of failure throughout the life of the crown.

...and they're beautiful.

April is Oral Cancer Awareness month

Oral cancer kills approximately 1 person every hour. Of the 35,000 people who will be diagnosed this year, only half will be alive 5 years from now.

These are scary statistics, and more can be found on the oral cancer foundation website along with information on prevention and treatment.

We feel strongly that identifying pre-cancer and suspicious lesions early is the best way to prevent oral cancer. And our edentulous patients are most at risk, because they will often wait until a denture doesn't fit before making an appointment for an exam.

On a more serious note, Dr. Balaze just returned from California. While there, he enjoyed visits with two very good friends and mentors, Dr. Bernie Villadiego and Dr. William Gregg.

Dr. Balaze to Attend AACD Conference

Dr. Balaze will be attending the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry's [AACD] 26th Annual Scientific Session, in Grapevine, Texas from Wednesday, April 28th - Saturday, May 1st. The AACD is the world's largest international dental organization dedicated to advancing excellence in the art and science of cosmetic dentistry through responsible esthetics, of which Dr. Balaze is an active member.

Contemporary cosmetic dentistry is a comprehensive approach to total oral health care that combines art and science to achieve optimal dental function, health, and esthetics. The annual AACD scientific session is the world's premier venue to get the in-depth training necessary to stay up-to-date in cosmetic dentistry and ultimately provide the best care to patients in our community.

Our wonderful office mangager, Lindsey Anderson, has been appointed as a member of the Seatle Opera Company! She will be leaving our Beachwood dental office on the fifteenth of April to start her [soon to be illustrious, I'm sure] vocal carreer. She's done an increadible job learning how to navigate the world of dental insurance, and keep our office running efficiently. The entire team here will miss you dearly. In an effort to promote good oral-health habits to the children in our community, we will buy back their unwanted Halloween candy. $1/lb. up to $5/child. All collected candy will be sent to our service men and women in Iraq.
